TORAJA

Arte documentary series, 2015
Assistant Fixer
A film by David Perrier

In the Indonesian island of Sulawesi live the Toraja people, a highly traditional ethnic group who express themselves through a unique housing structure called the Tongkonan, which literally means «the place where family members meet».

The Tongkonan, placed at the heart of Torajan culture, reflects their outlook on life.

Along with Tingting, a Tongkonan caretaker, French architect philosopher Philippe Simay learns about these habitations which serve both the living and the dead.
